An auction in Dubai has set a new world record for a number plate, with a bidding frenzy for ‘P7’ ending at 55 million dirhams – the equivalent of $A22.5 million.
Breaking a long-standing record for the ‘P1’ number plate that was sold for 52.2 million dirhams ($A21.3m) in 2008, the P7 looks more like a single number 7 as Dubai’s plate design displays the ‘P’ in the top right corner.
According to Emirates Auction, the latest purchase, which was made by an anonymous buyer, means the top nine most expensive number plates ever sold across the world originate in Dubai.
It’s not yet been disclosed what car will carry the P7 number plate.
All proceeds of the latest sale reportedly goes to Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid’s global food aid charity.
The allure of valuable single- or double-digit number plates remains strong within the UAE, especially since some ultra-luxurious hotels, like the Burj Al Arab, apparently refuse entry to vehicles displaying plates with “too many digits” at exclusive VIP events.
In Australia, the two-digit Victorian heritage plate ‘26’ sold for $1.1 million in 2020.
