Nuns on the Run

Citroen to supply support Picassos for Sydney cancer centre fund-raiser

If you are on the road somewhere between Dubbo and Sydney between May 24 and June 5 this year, don't be surprised if you see two Sisters from the Sisters of Charity heading a group of people determinedly treading the pavement in a generally easterly direction.

Sisters Helen Clarke and Leone Wittmack will be footing it from the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo all the way to Darlinghurst in Sydney as they raise money for the establishment of a new $100 million cancer centre in the St Vincent's Research Precinct in Sydney.

Along the 400-kilometre route, Sisters Helen and Leone will visit seven towns including Molong, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow and Katoomba as they raise cancer awareness in the community.

"The Nuns' Run stems from our desire to support those living with cancer while helping to create a new facility which will make a real difference for those affected by cancer and future generations," said Sisters Helen and Leone.

"Reaching out to regional communities is a vital part of the Sisters' mission, and this has been an integral part of the Cancer Centre's vision.  The Nuns' Run will give us an opportunity to engage with these communities, and build awareness of the Centre and the access it will offer regional and rural centres to innovations in cancer research and care through dedicated tele-health facilities," said Sister Helen.

The Garvan St Vincent's Campus Cancer Centre will combine St Vincents' best practice cancer care and Garvan's internationally renowned cancer research. Clinicians and researchers will work side-by-side enabling research findings to move quickly into patient care for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of individual cancer patients, with the ultimate goal of improving cancer outcomes for all Australians.

The Sisters invite participation in community activities along the route, including a fun run/walk on the start day in Dubbo on May 24 and at the finish in Sydney on June 5.

Along the way, the Nuns' Run will be supported by Citroen Picassos supplied by the French importer.
