Nyobolt sports car claims world-class EV charging time

British lightweight sports car can be recharged in less than five minutes, although its range is limited

British electric vehicle tech start-up Nyobolt claims to have set a new benchmark for EV fast-charging with its latest battery-electric sports car, replenishing its battery from 10 to 80 per cent using a 350kW DC charger in just 4:37min.

As well as being super-quick to recharge, Cambridge-based Nyobolt says its next-generation batteries can withstand 4000 full fast-charge cycles – equivalent to driving 600,000 miles (966,000km) – while retaining 80 per cent of capacity, making them far more durable than existing tech.

Despite being quick to recharge, Nyobolt’s prototype sports car – an all-electric alternative to a Porsche 718 Cayman – comes with a small 35kWh battery that only offers a WLTP range of 250km.

So the 10-80 per cent charge only adds around 200km of range.

For comparison, the 2025 Lotus Emeya uses a 102kWh battery and recently recorded a 14-minute top-up (10-80%) using a 400kW charger.

At that rate, more than 427km of range was added, so there’s every chance the Emeya would be close to the Nyobolt EV sport car’s sub-5min claim to 200km.

Nyobolt’s sports car prototype was designed in partnership with ex-Jaguar design boss Ian Callum’s consultancy, but full-scale series production is not on the agenda at this stage.

Instead, Nyobolt says it has been engineered for low-volume production for both road and track use.

It also hopes the concept of much smaller faster-charging batteries will catch on.

By using a smaller power pack, other parts like e-motors and inverters can be downsized too, saving weight and boosting efficiency.

The prototype weighs just 1250kg, which is 115kg lighter than the most basic combustion-powered 718 Cayman with a 2.0-litre turbo flat-six engine.

Nyobolt says it is speaking to eight car-makers about licensing its new tech, but will first deploy its batteries later this year in robotics.

It plans to produce 1000 battery packs in 2025 but says its production line could be scaled up to produce more than two million a year.

“Our Nyobolt EV demonstrates the efficiency gains facilitated by our fast-charging, longer-life battery technology, enabling capacity to be right-sized while still delivering the required performance,” said Nyobolt’s director of vehicle battery systems, Shane Davies.

“Nyobolt is removing the obstacle of slow and inconvenient charging, making electrification appealing and accessible to those who don’t have the time for lengthy charging times or space for a home charger.”
