There seems to be a lot of buzz at the moment at Bentley Motors’ historic site in Crewe, England and it is not about a new model of sports car.
Thanks to a new biodiversity initiative, the company has introduced 120,000 British Apis Mellifera honey bees to its campus. The area bordering the Cheshire countryside has been sown with bee friendly wild flowers and it appears to be paying off.
The Bentley branded bee hives are showing promising signs for the first honey harvest with each hive having the potential of producing around 15kg or around 50 jars of honey. Wild!
Peter Bosch, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing says that although the factory site is over 80 years old, they are always looking at ways to build on the heritage and improve the environmental impact of manufacturing.
“Bees populations are in decline in the UK, so installing two hives to help boost biodiversity is a great way to make use of the grassland at the edge of the site.”
The Bentley plant currently has the largest solar car port in the UK with all electricity used to produce the vehicles on site either being solar or certified green.
No word yet whether a newly purchased Bentley will come with complimentary honey or if the hives themselves are available to buy for your own estate. A sweet initiative nonetheless.
