Ferrari Special Projects has unwrapped its latest one-off supercar built for a wealthy client – the F8 Spider-based Ferrari SP-8.
The roofless Ferrari SP-8 throws caution to the wind, going without the F8 Spider’s folding retractable hard-top – or any other weatherproof fabric top.
This gave designers free rein, says Ferrari, to create an even more dramatic drop-top and the result is a jaw-dropping futuristic model.
Looking like not a single piece of its body is shared with the Ferrari F8, the one-off SP-8 gets a completely redesigned front-end that includes a new full-width cast aluminium grille, new air intakes and a pair of fresh slim headlights.
At the rear, the tail-lights are said to be derived from the Ferrari Roma, while the five-spoke alloy wheels are inspired by the same classic rims worn by the legendary F40.
Perhaps most striking is how designers have fused the carbon-fibre nose with the silver-painted surfaces on the rear half of the car.
Removing the roof and redesigning the entire body meant the SP-8 spent significant time in the wind tunnel tweaking its aerodynamics to ensure it remains stable at very high speeds.
Within its bespoke cabin there’s a new fake H-pattern gear selector that is already available in the SF90 and 296 GTB.
Under the sculpted rear boot lid is the Ferrari F8’s twin-turbocharged 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8.
It’s not known if power or torque have been turned up but it’s unlikely the new owner will be disappointed with the 530kW/770Nm from the standard car, especially since a lighter kerb weight should mean the SP-8 will be comfortably quicker than the 2.9 seconds it takes for the regular F8 to launch from 0-100km/h.
The restyled SP-8 could also have a higher top speed than the 340km/h the F8 manages.
It’s not known just how much the unnamed client from Taiwan paid for the Ferrari SP-8, but it’s thought the owner, who named it the SP-8 because the number eight is lucky in Chinese, could have paid as much as $10 million for the one-of-one model.
Before it was replaced by the new hybrid Ferrari 296 GTS, the F8 Spider sold in Australia for $536,888 plus on-road costs – a snip compared to the latest Ferrari Special Projects creation.
Before being delivered to its lucky owner, the new Ferrari SP-8 will be displayed at the Ferrari Museum at its Maranello HQ until March 2024.
