Opel's Meriva concept has gone on display at the Geneva Motor Show with suicide doors which open independently of the front doors.
Prior to the show, a mule and a disguised pre-production car were photographed on separate occasions by the spy photographers at Carparazzi.
From the Carparazzi pics of the pre-production car, taken in Finland, the spy photographers have denounced the door handles on the rear doors as fakes. If correct, that indicates that the company will introduce the concept's suicide door access to production.
Unlike other suicide door applications throughout the world, the Meriva concept's rear doors open independently of the front doors, allowing kids to alight without the driver or front passenger needing to open their respective doors. Even better, the Meriva's rear doors open out as much as 90 degrees, providing ease of access. Opel engineers responsible for the development of the Meriva concept claim that the suicide doors offer greater child/pedestrian safety than conventional doors.
The Geneva concept was powered by a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine, but Carparazzi expects diesel power to be offered also.
Will it come to Australia?
"It's too early to speculate," said John Lindsay, Holden's National Manager - Media Relations.
