Opulent new 2024 Zeekr 009 Grand revealed

Range-topping electric people-mover debuts with huge 43-inch rear entertainment screen and it’s coming to Oz

Zeekr is one of four new Chinese auto brands launching in Australia later this year and, as we’ve reported, its first two models will be the Zeekr X small electric SUV and the Zeekr 009 electric people-mover.

Now, the premium sister brand to automotive names like Volvo, Lotus, Polestar and Lynk & Co under the giant Geely Auto group has revealed the 2024 Zeekr 009 Grand, a super-luxury four-seat executive version of the premium MPV – and it’s headed Down Under too.

Made even more opulent by removing seats and adding some serious tech toys, the 009 Grand is distinguished by a unique grille and bespoke 20-inch forged wheels, but it’s inside where the major upgrades happen.

The Grand replaces the Zeekr 009’s standard six- and seven-seat layouts with an ultra-spacious four-seat configuration comprising the two reclining airline-style rear seats mounted behind the C-pillar in the name of legroom.

The pews are power-adjustable in every measure (24-way) and split by a raised centre console housing a control pad for the massive 43-inch LED rear entertainment screen – mounted against the cabin partition – and 31-speaker Yamaha surround sound system, as well as an 18-litre refrigerator.

Privacy is ensured by the world’s first automotive application of LC light curtain glass, which offers 10 levels of brightness adjustment between nearly 100 per cent and just 0.5 per cent light transmission.

Underneath is an all-new drivetrain comprising silicon-carbide motors that up outputs over the 009’s standard 400kW dual-motor powertrain, yielding an improved 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds (versus 4.5sec).

Claimed driving range, meantime, is 702km when measured against the more lenient China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle – down from 822km for the standard 009, which is available with an optional 15.6-inch rear screen and is claimed to have class-leading torsional rigidity.

First launched in China in 2022, the Zeekr 009 is based on the same SEA electric architecture as several upcoming Volvo models, measures a big 5209mm long, 2024mm wide and 1867mm tall, rides on an expensive 3205mm wheelbase and weighs as much as 2830kg thanks to a huge 140kWh battery.

There’s no word yet on when the Grand will join the standard models on sale in Australia, where the six- and seven-seat Zeekr 009 and the Zeekr X will arrive in the second half of 2024.
