Our five favourite Carpool feature stories of 2023

There were some yarns we published during the year that we just can’t get enough of.

Whether it’s because of the nostalgia or historical meaning associated with it, the unique take on something ordinary or simply because of the fun imagery, some stories just stick in your mind long after you’ve written or have read them.

Here at carsales’ lifestyle and pop-culture destination, Carpool, we’ve done our best to find the weirdest, most wonderful and most helpful content in the car world to bring some imagination, inspiration and a smile to your face.

It’s a place where we cover everything from road trips to car hacks and tips, and from fun accessories and gadgets for your car to the quirkiest car-related stories you’ll read online.

Here are our five favourite Carpool feature stories that we’ve published in 2023…

5. The history of the Goodyear Blimp

Goodyear is one of the world’s largest and most well-known car tyre companies in the world, but did you know it has a long history with the skies too?

The Goodyear Blimp has become an iconic symbol of sports and entertainment and surprisingly it isn’t just a company putting its logo on an airship. As well as creating some of the first rubber tyres for planes, Goodyear created and launched balloons and most famously, blimps which have evolved from wartime usages to entertainment and a pop culture mainstay.

When buying a car, there are a lot of things to consider from the cost to own and run, fuel economy, looks and size, but have you ever thought about its scent?

New car smell is amongst the most popular fragrances in the world, and for good reason. The mixture of plastics, textiles and other materials combine to create a scent that in most cases reminds you of your brand-new car purchase.

3. Six things that show you’re a good driver

So you think that you're a good driver? Well, if you can tick off all of these items, then yes, yes can be.

2. We look back at the changing face of the Toyota Prado

We compare all five generations of the Toyota Landcruiser Prado off-roader to see how far the design has come and what parts of its heritage have come back in style.

Everything old is new again in fashion and design and car design is no different. Over 30 years ago the first generation of the Toyota Landcruiser Prado hit the streets (it itself a variation from the old 70 series Landcruiser) and has become a favourite with families and off-roading adventurers alike here in Australia and around the world.

1. The features in cars that you probably don't really need

These luxe creature comforts sound nice but can actually cost you more and offer you less in the long run.

It is undeniable that new cars today can come with a lot of pretty impressive features. From steering wheel and seat warmers (aka what my daughter aptly calls butt boilers), park assist, a variety of safety alert systems, automatic headlights and wipers and remote start capability.
