Overhauled 2025 Toyota GR Yaris arrives

Facelifted hot hatch touches down but the automatic isn’t due until mid-2025

The facelifted 2025 Toyota GR Yaris has arrived Down Under priced from $55,490 plus on-road costs, however those holding out for the long-awaited automatic version will have to wait another six months or so.

Using the GR Yaris’ mid-life facelift to revamp its local line-up, Toyota Australia has confirmed four variants for our market thus far: the GT manual ($55,490), GT automatic ($57,990), GTS manual ($60,490) and GTS automatic ($62,990).

The GT and GTS naming convention bring the GR Yaris into line with the GR Supra, GR86 and GR Corolla, with the GTS replacing the more aggressive Rallye flagship.

Manual prices have risen $4100 as part of the update with the automatics – due in mid-2025 – pitched another $2500 upstream on account of their adaptive cruise control and parking support brake functionality.

Debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, the facelifted GR Yaris has been treated to a major design overhaul inside and out as well as a significant power bump and of course its new transmission option.

The new exterior is softer and curvier than before while the interior sports an all-new dash, updated multimedia system and a lower driver’s hip point that’s said to liberate some 37mm of headroom.

Power and torque now match the bigger GR Corolla at 221kW/400Nm while a new ‘Gravel’ drive mode has been added to optimise grip on slippery surfaces.

Headline equipment on the GT grade includes an 8.0-inch infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, two USB-C ports, suede and leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, a head-up display, climate control and an eight-speaker JBL sound system.

The GTS largely mirrors these appointments but ups the ante with lightweight forged 18-inch alloy wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber, a Torsen limited-slip differential, high-performance suspension and a new sub radiator and intercooler spray button.

“All GR Yaris variants gain the upgraded Toyota Safety Sense suite of active features which now includes front and rear parking sensors with rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor, safe exit assist and tyre pressure warning,” Toyota said.

“A new ‘Liquid Mercury’ metallic paint hue has been added to the GR Yaris’ five-colour palette, joining Glacier White, Frosted White (GTS only), Tarmac Black and Feverish Red.”

As with the updated GR Corolla, the brand is yet to publish any new performance claims for the GR Yaris, but odds are at least a tenth or two will have been taken off the manual’s 0-100km/h time while the automatic could feasibly dip below the five-second barrier.
