Panasonic unveils AI-enhanced head-up display

New tech claimed to automatically help drivers identify hazards day or night

Panasonic's automotive division has used the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show to reveal a pioneering new head-up display that incorporates its next-generation augmented reality technology.

Claimed to use next-gen artificial intelligence, the new Panasonic technology is capable of scanning the road ahead to identify potential hazards, like cyclists, pedestrians crossing roads and low-hanging bridges, while enhancing the navigation.

Featuring a multi-colour display, 4K imaging and 3D navigation graphics, the new tech can overlay road markings, GPS arrows and sudden obstacles and is said to improve a driver's vision at night.

In the video, the system also highlights vehicles emerging in the pathway of the driven vehicle, providing a collision warning.

Projecting the head-up display (HUD) system at the driver's line of sight, Panasonic claims its new system both improves safety and reduces driver distraction.

Said to project a virtual image on the road up to 10 metres ahead, the HUD's augmented reality instruction remains clear and in focus thanks to new eye-tracking technology.

Commenting on the new tech, Panasonic Automotive boss Scott Kirchner said: "Panasonic’s AR HUD solutions cover more of the roadway, with traditional cluster content like speed and fuel in the near field as well as 3D overlays in the far field, showing navigation and other critical driver data mapping spatially to the road ahead.

"And in a future with more self-driving vehicles, our AR HUD could provide an important added level of comfort and assurance for AV passengers as well."

As well as the new augmented reality tech, Panasonic has also revealed a new wireless charging system that's claimed to offer industry-leading fast charging without the need to plug in.
