Panoz DeltaWing GT revealed

US car maker to return with two- and four seat sports car inspired by radical DeltaWing racer

Panoz has revealed a road-car concept based on its radical DeltaWing race car that competes in the IMSA Tudor United SportsCar Championship in the US.

Called the DeltaWing GT, the new concept for a two-seat sports car boasts a low drag coefficient and could feature pure electric, hybrid, petrol, diesel or natural gas powertrains.

Built around a lightweight aluminium space-frame, the GT version is expected to come with a 250kW turbocharged four-cylinder engine mounted transversely at the rear of the car. Like the racer the road car runs an ultra narrow front track and a 30:70 front:rear weight distribution.

The unusual Deltawing race car was conceived to be as quick to lap as its rivals but use half as much fuel.

As well as the GT sports car, Panoz is also working on a four-seat sedan version that’s expected to come with a less powerful 80kW three-cylinder petrol engine that will offer class-leading fuel consumption and emissions.

Prices for the GT are expected to be around $100,000 while the sedan will cost from $40,000.

Real-world testing of both the GT and four-seat is expected to begin at the end of this year with production expected to commence in 2018 at the earliest.
