Paris begins pioneering noise radar tests
Loud cars and motorcycles with antisocial sports exhausts to be automatically ticketed in new trialParis has begun targeting cars and motorcycles that generate excessive noise with a new pioneering "noise radar" that pinpoints the unlawful vehicle and automatically tickets it.
Using four microphones to triangulate the origin of the unlawful sound, the new CCTV cameras have been deployed in the Parisian suburb of Villeneuve-le-Roi south east of the French city.
As part of a two-year trial, around 40 noise radars will be placed primarily around bars and Paris' entertainment regions, as well as 17 major tourist spots where city officials think loud motorcycles and noisy supercars tend to amass.
Currently, since the technology is at prototype stage, any rider or driver who falls foul of the acoustic cameras won't actually have to pay the fine, but that could change later this year with when new laws are passed to allow fines to be implemented.
Lobbying for the noise radar to be introduced, Villeneuve-le-Roi mayor Didier Gonzales told
:"Noise is the bane of modern life and a major health issue. It hurts people like secondary smoking does."We have nothing against Ferraris or Harley-Davidsons, but their owners sometimes like to demonstrate their vehicles' power and the noise really troubles residents."
It's not just the city of Paris experimenting with noise radar. Acoustic cameras are being used throughout the UK as part of similar trials with a view to introduce them shortly.
