Mazda has confirmed its bigger new 2.5-litre petrol engine will be fitted to the popular CX-5 next year, when it is almost certain to join the top-selling mid-size SUV range in Australia.
The CX-5 has been a smash hit since it was launched Down Under in late February as the Japanese brand’s first all-SKYACTIV model, and the addition of a larger petrol engine is certain to drive sales even higher. Mazda’s all-new CX-5 has outsold traditional SUV leaders like the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester in Australia so far this year, although both of those models will be renewed here early next year. The new 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine will be introduced locally early next year in the all-new Mazda6, in which it produces 138kW and 250Nm – making it significantly more powerful than the entry-level CX-5’s 114kW/200Nm 2.0-litre petrol four, which delivers 113kW/198Nm in the CX-5 AWD.
The CX-5 is also available with Mazda’s new 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D turbo-diesel engine, which produces 129kW/420Nm and offers class-leading fuel consumption as low as 5.7L/100km.
Fuel consumption for the 2.5-litre petrol engine is 6.3L/100km in the lighter Mazda6 sedan (and 6.4L/100km for the wagon), while the 2.0-litre CX-5's economy figures range between 6.4 and 6.9L/100km. That means that although the 2.5 will offer up to 25kW more power, 52Nm more torque and better throttle response than the 2.0-litre petrol engine – as well as 9kW more power but 170Nm less torque than the diesel – it will also return the highest fuel consumption in the CX-5 range.
Mazda’s plan to add the new 2.5-litre engine to the CX-5 range was confirmed at last week’s Paris motor show by Mazda Motor Europe’s Vice-President of European R&D, Ichiro Hirose, who said: “It will come soon – 2013”.
Mazda said the engine was not yet confirmed for Australia, but indicated it would be as soon as possible.
“If it’s made available to us we’ll certainly look at it,” said Mazda Australia spokesman Steve Maciver, who added that the company has a tradition of meeting customer demands, which in Australia include larger engines.
The 2.5 will be matched only to a six-speed manual transmission in the front-wheel drive Mazda6 sedan and wagon, but it is not yet known whether it will be available in both 2WD and AWD configuration – or with manual and automatic transmissions – in the CX-5.
