Stop Press, September 19: McLaren has released official images and a press release for the P1 overnight, ahead of its Paris debut Thursday next week.
"The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage," Ron Dennis, McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman was quoted saying in the press release. "Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again."
"Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit," says McLaren Automotive Managing Director Antony Sheriff. "It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made."
The official pics follow a still from a week ago and teaser video of the laser light show depicting what is now known to be the long-awaited successor to the company’s iconic F1 supercar. The unique teaser video, revealed the basic shape of the all-new model and has attracted more than 100,000 views in five days.
Due for global release in 2014, the belated F1 replacement is expected to set new performance benchmarks by eclipsing the record-setting 2.5-second 0-100km/h acceleration and 400km/h-plus top speed of Bugatti’s 883kW 8.0-litre W16-engined Veyron Super Sport.
According to Autocar, just 500 examples of the P1 will be produced – each anticipated to come with a Ricardo-developed V10, lightweight carbon-fibre monocell similar to the 12C’s, Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with switchable ABS, a five-stage traction control system and aluminium pushrod suspension with hydraulic anti-roll control and adaptive dampers.
