Rolls-Royce has used the Paris Motor Show to unveil its latest Bespoke department offering, the Phantom Metropolitan Collection.
Limited to only 20 units, the Phantom Metropolitan Collection 'pays homage to the world's great metropolises through the meticulous application of marquetry – the art of inlaying small pieces of wood veneer to form decorative motifs,' according to Rolls-Royce.
"I can think of no more fitting location than Paris to debut this remarkable new motor car. This is a city that echoes Rolls-Royce's very special brand promise in perfectly combining the timeless and modern in a manner that celebrates the art of the master craftsperson," said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "Our customers across the globe delight in challenging our designers and craftspeople to create true, one-of-a-kind pieces of automotive art. This latest Collection serves to showcase the extraordinary scope for Bespoke personalisation afforded to every patron of the marque."
More mobile art form than transportation vehicle, the Phantom Metropolitan Collection features a specially-developed Aetherius Grey leather interior to echo the colours of a modern city. Some 6800 two-tone stitches are applied to the central rear seat flutes to depict an abstract image of a skyscraper.
Up-front the centre console houses a unique clock that features a rotating bezel, which displays 24 cities (including Paris), along with their time zone.
Phantom's signature picnic table offers rear-seat occupants an overhead view of a 'city' when opened, created by 500 individual wood veneer pieces. When closed, the table backs offer a lower perspective of the veneer city skyline.
The Phantom displayed in Paris is finished in Darkest Tungsten, a colour inspired by a modern city skyline, although over 44,000 colour options will be available to those commissioning a Metropolitan Collection. A 'hand-applied coachline' is also applied, mimicking the interior stitching by portraying an abstract silhouette of 'skyscraper' buildings.
Designed to inspire Bespoke clients, the Metropolitan follows on from the Phantom Drophead Coupe Waterspeed Collection that paid tribute to Sir Donald Campbell's Rolls-Royce-powered water speed record endeavours in the 1930s.
Rolls-Royce Bespoke has seen record levels of demand in 2014, with 90 per cent of Wraith, 80 per cent of Ghost and 'nearly every' Phantom sold across the globe in September 2014 featuring an element from the Bespoke design department.
