The Passat was the first model of VW's 'new generation' (after Beetle and the Kombi Bus) vehicles to go into production in 1973 at Emden, Germany, with front-wheel drive, a water-cooled four-cylinder engine and a range of engines up to 110bhp (82kW).
VW currently produces 2900 vehicles from various Passat series every working day at plants in Emden, Zwickau/Mosel Germany, Shanghai China and Anchieta in Brazil.
Last year VW delivered 600,000 Passats worldwide. The main markets in Europe include Germany, UK, France, Spain and Italy and markets outside Europe include Australasia and the US.
