Perth-to-Sydney Marathon rally back on

Entries open for rally that recreates Aussie leg of 1968 London-Sydney Marathon after last year’s cancellation

A vintage-inspired rally event that will see competitors race across Australia is set to take place later this year, dubbed the 2022 Perth-to-Sydney Marathon.

The event, which was postponed in 2021 due to COVID-19 and related border closures, is designed to celebrate, commemorate and, in many ways, re-enact the Australian leg of the famous 1968 London-Sydney Marathon.

Set to run over 10 days and cover almost 6000km, the marathon will be held from October 27 to November 6, 2022.

Using the same roads and tracks from the Aussie section of the 1968 ‘race across the world’, more than 75 teams have already entered the 2022 Perth-Sydney event, including teams from Europe, the UK and New Zealand.

Some entrants are also returning some 50 years later, with a special category for entrants and vehicles that competed in the original 1968 rally, as well as those held in 1977, 1993 and 2000.

Other categories include vehicles (and replicas) that have competed in other significant marathon events, along with vehicles at the discretion of the event organisers, including a Tesla Model 3 which is seeking to become the first EV to complete a marathon-length rally.

And while the Perth-Sydney event may not attract as many entrants as Targa Tasmania, event director Laurie Mason is confident it will draw plenty of attention.

“I competed in Targa Tasmania in 1995 and 1996 and I love the roads,” said Mason.

“But to travel across Australia in one event, covering magnificent landscapes and roads from Outback WA, the Nullarbor Plain, the Gawler and Flinders Ranges of SA, Outback and Riverina NSW, the Victorian and NSW Alpine Regions, and then to Sydney, the countryside and roads across our great country are simply breathtaking.”

The original rally in 1968 started at the Crystal Palace in London. To get to Australia, competitors boarded a ship from Bombay to Fremantle, where the rally restarted in Perth and finished at Warwick Farm in Sydney.
