Peugeot would like to add another Light Car offering to the local lineup; one a bit smaller than the current 207.
The replacement for the stylish 107 is due late 2010-early 2011 and Peugeot Australia is making a concerted effort to convince headquarters in Paris that local buyers would be keen to receive the new 108 model.
According to Peugeot Australia the 107 model was on the agenda for Australia, however its shared platform -- with Toyota (for the Aygo) and Citroen (C1) -- meant supply was focussed on the European market.
The recent 'scrappage scheme' designed to promote new car sales in Europe against a GFC-prompted downturn in the auto industry also conspired against extended supply of the 107 to other countries, Peugeot Australia spokesman Richard Grant told the Carsales Network.
The replacement 107 model was displayed at the Geneva motor show back in 2005 and is "well due" for release, confirms Mr Grant.
Peugeot insiders who have seen designs for the 108 say the new Light Car has features resembling the SR1 Concept car shown at this year's Geneva motor show. It too will wear the newly designed Peugeot Lion badge introduced by the RCZ.
