Peugeot 3008 and 5008 get new mild-hybrid power

New electrified petrol powertrain claimed to improve performance – and reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent

New 48-volt mild-hybrid technology will be introduced in the 2023 Peugeot 3008 and Peugeot 5008, alongside plug-in hybrid power and the recently announced all-electric E-3008.

The new mild-hybrid Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs have been introduced as part of the French car brand's vow to electrify every model in its line-up by 2023.

The new powertrain, badged as the PureTech 130 EAT8, combines the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic and an electric motor powered by a small battery to produce more torque at lower speeds while delivering up to 15 per cent lower fuel consumption, says Peugeot.

Better still, Peugeot claims that in urban environments, the 3008 and 5008 mild-hybrid operate in pure-electric mode for more than 50 per cent of the time to slash localised emissions.

In total, the new mild-hybrid powertrain produces 100kW and 230Nm – figures that are actually down on the 122kW/240Nm outputs of the 1.6-litre turbo-four that powers the 3008 and 5008 currently sold in Australia.

In practice, however, performance is expected to be similar because the electric motor – when it's not acting as a generator to top up the small 0.9kWh lithium-ion battery – can kick in to provide an extra 21kW/55Nm low down in the rev range, and an additional 9kW of power when the driver presses the throttle fully.

Packaged within the transmission casing, the same electric motor can drive the Peugeot SUVs alone at low speeds, hence the claim that half of all city and town driving can be covered in zero-emissions electric mode.

When drivers lift the throttle at speeds of over 145km/h the new mild-hybrid set-up allows for coasting, saving yet more fuel, with a 48-volt belt-driven starter ensuring fast re-starts.

Speaking of fuel savings, Peugeot says that on average the new 48-volt powertrain is around 1.0L/100km more efficient than the equivalent non-hybrid petrol engine, but that saving increases to 2.5L/100km in the city. Even on the highway the fuel saving is around 0.7L/100km, says Peugeot.

It adds that all this translates to a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 20g/km on the WLTP test cycle.

Peugeot says both passenger and boot space are all maintained due to clever packing, with the extra battery and hardware mounted under the front left seat.

Helping drivers maximise the efficiency of its new mild-hybrid 1.2-litre turbo powertrain, Peugeot has equipped the 3008 and 5008 with a new specific ‘HYBRID’ display that shows the speedo in blue when driving in pure-electric mode.

It also displays energy flow, battery charge level, operating status (Charge, Eco, Power) and the percentage of distance travelled in electric mode.

A new acoustic warning alert also operates at up speeds of up to 30km/h to warn pedestrians and cyclists that the vehicle is approaching, when in all-electric mode.

There's no word yet on when the PureTech 130 AT8-powered Peugeot 3008 and 5008 will become available in Australia, following its European launch in the second quarter of 2023.

The French brand says it will roll out the same new mild-hybrid tech on other models, including the 208, 2008, 308, 308 SW wagon and 408 crossover.
