Peugeot 408 SUV coupe teased

All-new fastback-styled crossover to slot into range below Peugeot 3008 as rival for Renault Arkana

Peugeot has begun a teaser campaign for its all-new 2022 Peugeot 408 SUV coupe that will be fully unveiled this month ahead of its European launch later this year.

Releasing a single close-up image of its distinctive grille, badge and Peugeot emblem, the French car-maker describes the new model as combining the “characteristic codes of SUVs with a dynamic fastback silhouette”.

Seemingly breaking the brand’s own naming convention, until now Peugeot SUVs and people-movers have used a four-digit naming policy (2008, 3008, etc), while hatches and sedans have three-digit numerals (208, 308, etc).

Some pundits are suggesting that the new Peugeot 408 name hints at proportions that might take more of a jacked-up fastback sedan or hatchback shape, mirroring what its sister brand has done with the Citroen C5 X that’s heading for Australia.

If correct, the new crossover would indirectly replace the Peugeot 408 small sedan that was sold from 2010-2018 in markets like China.

Beneath the skin the 408 is destined to be based on the Stellantis STLA medium architecture (formerly named EMP2) and share the Peugeot 308 and 3008 engine line-up that currently includes a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel and two plug-in hybrids.

Later on, a full all-electric 408 is also expected. When it arrives, it is set to borrow from the upcoming Peugeot e-308 powertrain that consists of a small 115kW/270Nm electric motor that is fed current from a 54kWh battery. Total range between top-ups should be around 400km.

The new 408 is expected to rival small SUVs like the current Kia Sportage and Renault Arkana, while the e-408 will help Peugeot battle it out against the likes of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Volvo C40 Recharge.

Stay tuned, as the Peugeot 408 is set to be fully unveiled at the end of June.
