Peugeot axes prices

New distributor cuts prices of Peugeot 208 and 2008 models by up to $1500

Peugeot’s new Australian importer has taken an axe to prices of the slow-selling 208 light-hatch and 2008 small crossover.

Pricing for Peugeot’s cheapest car now starts at $22,190 plus on-road costs for the 208 Active auto (down $300), while both the 208 Allure auto and 208 GT-Line auto are now $1300 more affordable at a respective $24,990 and $26,990 plus ORCs. The 208 GTi hot hatch remains unchanged at $29,990 plus ORCs.

Meantime, 2008 pricing now starts $1000 lower than before at $25,490 plus ORCs for the entry-level Active auto, rising to $29,990 plus ORCs for the mid-range Allure auto (down $1000) and $31,500 plus ORCs for the flagship GT-Line – both $1490 less than before.

The price of metallic paint has also been cut for both models, from $990 to $590 (and to $690 for the 508) but there are no changes to either model’s 81kW 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The price cuts come just a week after Inchcape offered a $4000 factory bonus across the 308 small-car range, which is now in runout ahead of the September 1 release of the facelifted version.

They also come ahead of this week’s launch of the all-new 3008 medium SUV line-up, which will headline the ‘relaunch’ of the French brand under new distributor Inchcape, the Australian Subaru distributor that assumed control of Peugeot and Citroen here on June 1.

The large 5008 crossover arrives late this year as the second all-new SUV from Peugeot, and will be followed by a redesigned 508 sedan/wagon Down Under in the second half of 2018.

Peugeot’s new models can’t come soon enough. The 2008 is the brand’s only model to increase its sales in a growth market this year (by a slender 4.2 per cent), with 4008 sales down 63 per cent, 208 sales down 58 per cent, 308 sales down 48 per cent, 508 sales down 44 per cent and (old) 3008 sales down 36 per cent.

To July this year, only 1180 Australians have bought a new Peugeot – just over half the number at the same point last year.
