Peugeot Citroen signs up Bosch in diesel-electric hybrid deal

Cross-border deal helps speed up diesel hybrid's time to market

In what it calls "the right approach for quickly and cost effectively bringing to market technological innovations that can significantly lower CO2 emissions", PSA Peugeot Citroen has turned to German giant Bosch for the supply of electric motors in the development of its next generation diesel hybrid powertrain.

Making its first appearance at the 2008 Paris Motorshow in Peugeot's Prologue and Citroen's Hypnos Concept (pictured) cars, the AWD diesel hybrid system is slated to hit European roads in Peugeot and Citroen vehicles from 2011.

The technology sits at the heart of the French conglomerate's environmental strategy. Bosch will play a crucial part in getting it to market quickly, bringing three decades' experience in associated technologies and decades more in battery, electrical drive and brake and engine management systems.

The agreement will see Bosch supplying the rear electric motor, the front-mounted high voltage alternator. It will also provide the interface and power electronics to control it all, plus ABS and stability control systems designed to maximise energy recovery.
