Peugeot has fuelled recent speculation around the make-up of its future hot hatch line-up after committing to bring a range of “electrified sports vehicles” to market from 2020.
The French car-maker confirmed the news in a release overnight, pledging it will offer customers “a range of high-performance, low-emission electrified sports vehicles from 2020".
"These electrified sports versions will be developed in collaboration with Peugeot Sport teams and will contribute to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions, in accordance with the instructions of the European institutions addressed to the automotive industry," Peugeot said in an official release.
The revelations support persistent rumours the next generation of 208 GTi and 308 GTi will integrate some form of electrification.
Aside from environmental benefits, Peugeot clearly sees an advantage in electrification boosting its performance credentials.
"Driving pleasure is at the heart of the brand's history. Electrification is a new opportunity to offer new high-performance versions to our customers looking for low-emission sports sensations," said company chief executive Jean-Philippe Imparato.
"Sensations will be amplified by the performance provided by electrification. New territories to be explored, new challenges to be met, the adventure of the Peugeot brand continues for an exciting future. Boredom will never be part of our DNA."
Peugeot’s electric plans have already begun materialising with new hybrid models including the 3008 GT Hybrid4 and 508 hybrid sedan, both revealed last month.
The car-maker's stunning e-Legend concept (pictured) at this month's Paris motor show also showed off Peugeot's electric wares.
