Peugeot has revealed the first official pics of its production-ready 3008 compact SUV, which was previewed at last year's Paris motor show by the Prologue Hybrid 4 concept.
Based on the 308 hatchback, the '00' designation of the newcomer denotes its slightly different job description -- ie that of a conveyance with more passenger space and load-carrying ability.
Although retaining a compact footprint on the road -- it's less than 4.4m long and just over 1.8m wide -- the 3008's tallboy stance means there's more head- and legroom for front and rear occupants, and the feeling of airiness is said to be enhanced by the 1.6sqm panoramic glass roof (optional).
Peugeot also boasts of a highly efficient air-con system that pumps out air via four individual vents mounted in the fascia panel, heating ducts for the feet of the front rear occupants, and two adjustable vents for the rear passengers.
The automatic air-con system also comes with an Air Quality Sensor (AQS), which automatically closes the air recirculation flap if a high level of ambient pollution is detected.
The 3008's utilitarian capabilities are said to be enhanced by a split tailgate, the lower tailgate flap of which can become a seat that can support up to 200kg.
The load area can swallow 512 litres or 1604 litres with the rear seats folded. And on certain models the load area interior light also serves as a rechargeable portable torch -- as in the 308 SW.
The 3008's petrol engine line-up comprises a 1.6-litre unit that ekes out 90kW and 112kW in normally aspirated and turbocharged forms respectively, while the diesel range includes a 82kW 1.6-litre unit and a 2.0-litre motor that puts out 112kW in manual form, or 122kW when hooked up with the six-speed auto.
Visually, the 3008 is virtually unchanged from last September's Prologue concept, sporting Peugeot's trademark swept-back headlights and a large open-mouthed grille. The rear is adorned by arrow-shaped tail-lights and bumper that incorporates a diffuser.
Mod-cons include a 'Head Up Display' that displays speed, cruise control/speed limiter and distance alert information, and there's a 'Distance Alert' that uses a radar to help the driver maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
Models fitted with the two highest performance engines (1.6 litre THP petrol engine and a new 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine) gain an all new Dynamic Roll Control system that's claimed to enhance dynamics without sacrificing comfort.
The "Outdoor" abilities of the 3008 are further strengthened through a new traction control system, Grip Control. The system consists of an upgraded traction control system with five operation modes and special mud and snow tyres.
That said, the 3008 will initially be offered only in front-wheel-drive guise. Buyers seeking an all-wheel drive version will have to wait until the debut of the PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) Group's first model to be equipped with HYbrid4 technology.
To be launched by 2011 the latest, the 3008 HYbrid4 will combine a conventional engine that powers the front wheels with an electric motor located under the luggage bay to drive the rear wheels.
