These are the first official images of the "5 by Peugeot" concept car due to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva motor show.
The suave design study is a precursor to the all-new 508, which will effectively replace both the 407 and 607 sedans when the production variant surfaces (in all likelihood at October's Paris motor show).
In addition to embodying Peugeot's new design language (which finally ditches the gaping-mouthed look that has been a trademark of the brand for the past few years), the 5 also features the PSA Group's HYbrid4 technology, which pairs a 120kW 2.0-litre HDi FAP diesel engine (driving the front wheels) with a 27kW electric motor at the rear.
"It ensures both high levels of driving enjoyment and environmental protection -- 200hp (147kW), four-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km or zero in electric mode," says Peugeot of the drivetrain.
The 5 concept spans 4860mm from bumper to bumper (184mm longer than the 407), 1880mm wide (69mm more than 407) and has a wheelbase of 2815mm (90mm more than 407, and 15mm longer than even the 607), which suggests the cabin will offer ample stretching room for both front- and rear-seat occupants.
The vehicle shares its underpinnings with the second-gen Citroen C5, even though it's longer and wider than the latter.
Going on the pre-release images, it appears Peugeot has nailed the 5 concept's styling, which bears a general family resemblance to the SR1 drop-top, of which the first pics surfaced last month.
Peugeot says it aimed to create the effect that the vehicle "has been hewn from a solid block of material", and the result is a broad-shouldered, imposing sedan -- an effect accentuated by the flared wheelarches and 19-inch alloys.
The grille ostensibly "appears to be suspended in front of the car", while the revised Lion badge retains its traditional spot near the leading edge of the long aluminium bonnet.
Based on the market acceptance of the cars it will replace -- the 407 never soared to great heights here (its best annual tally here was 1659 sales in 2005), while the 607 (discontinued locally in 2008) never made it past double-digits -- the 508 has a big task ahead of it.
