OK so it doesn’t have giant animated eyes plastered across the windscreen but this is about as close as you’re going to get to a driveable version of Sally Carrera from Pixar’s eponymous 2006 animated movie Cars.
Called the Porsche 911 Sally Special, the one-of-a-kind vehicle is based on the current-generation 992-series 2022 Porsche 911 GTS but attempts to look like the 996-series 911 of 2002, on which Sally Carrera was based.
The 2022 Porsche 911 Sally Special is powered by the same potent 3.0-litre twin-turbo boxer six – and sends the same lusty 353kW and 570Nm to the rear wheels via the same seven-speed manual – as seen in the Porsche 911 GTS, which is currently a $314,800 proposition.
But the one-off Porsche 911 Sally Special is expected to sell for considerably more and could even top the million-dollar mark.
Set to be auctioned by RM Sotheby's this Saturday (August 20) during Monterey Car Week in California, the Porsche 911 Sally Special features classic 911 Turbo alloy wheels (increased to 20/21-inch front/rear, as per the latest GTS) mimicking the design of Sally Carrera’s 996-Series Turbo wheels from 2002, along with a unique Sally Blue Metallic paint job that was hand-painted.
There’s a number of interior upgrades, including a cheeky new option for the drive mode selector dial on the steering wheel, which has a ‘Kachow! Mode’, in honour of Lightning McQueen’s famous catch-cry.
Continuing the Pixar theme is unique chequered ‘Pepita houndstooth’ fabric upholstery, chalk-coloured leather, Speed Blue stitching and Sally Blue Metallic interior highlights.
The iconic Cars movie logo is on the doors inserts, the side of the seats and even on the tyre valve caps. There’s also a handful of custom Sally Special logos, such as on the scuff plates, dashboard and keyfob, while Sally Carrera’s signature is affixed to the B-pillars.
Pieced together by Porsche’s internal mod shop, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, it even features Sally's hidden tattoo when the rear spoiler extends.
“Implementing that was a very special challenge. The customisation elements are detailed and extensive,” said the boss of Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, Boris Apenbrink.
The Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur team spent 10 months bringing the project to life and collaborated with Bob Pauley, production designer on the original Cars movie (who first drew Sally Carrera) and Jay Ward, creative director at Pixar Animation Studios.
“We had great fun creating 911 Sally Special and it's the first time we've worked on a project of this kind,” said Ward.
“We decided early on that we wanted to create a completely drivable 911 – inspired by Sally Carrera, but just not an exact copy. Sally Carrera loves to drive – that was our inspiration. We asked ourselves: if Sally were built today as a road-approved model, what would she look like?”
The winning bidder of the Porsche 911 Sally Special will also score a custom Porsche Design chronograph wrist watch, which features the same Sally Blue Metallic paint work, plus a second set of wheels, a matching car cover and a book of sketches from Bob Pauley.
Auction proceeds will benefit two charities: USA for UNHCR, the non-profit UN Refugee Agency working to help refugees forced to flee Ukraine as a result of Russian conflict, and Girls Inc, a non-profit that supports girls between the ages of five and 18.
