Plug-in 2025 Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro launches

Powerful electrified sedan and wagon said to be able to cover up to 110km in EV mode

The 2025 Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro has been unveiled in both sedan and wagon guise, blending 270kW of power with an all-electric range of up to 110km.

Adopting the e-hybrid name for the first time, in place of Audi’s former TFSI-e nomenclature, the all-wheel-drive plug-in Audi A5 e-hybrid has a 185kW 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. The unit is blended with a 25.9kWh lithium-ion battery and a 105kW electric motor that lives within the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Combined, the Audi A5 e-hybrid produces up to 270kW and 500Nm, seeing it sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 5.1 seconds and delivering a 250km/h top speed.

A less powerful version of the same plug-in powertrain is also available. With 220kW and 450Nm, it takes 5.9 seconds to hit the same performance benchmark.

Maximum charging speed is up to 11kW using an AC charger, with a 0-100 per cent top up taking 2.5 hours. No details have been released regarding fast DC charging.

Boosting efficiency over previous Audi PHEVs (there wasn’t ever an A4 plug-in), the German brand says it has ramped up regenerative braking, with a pair of paddles added to the steering wheel to adjust the level of energy recuperation.

In its fiercest setting Audi claims the A5 can recover up to 88kW of power thanks to its integrated brake control system that blends regenerative with mechanical braking.

Out of town in EV mode drivers can drive up to speeds of 140km/h.

Available only with the sporty S line exterior styling, equipment for the latest plug-in hybrid Audi A5 is high.

The PHEV gets Progressive steering, navigation, Audi’s MMI Panoramic Display and a wireless phone charging pad. There's also tri-zone climate control that uses an electric compressor for peak efficiency.

The more powerful 270kW variant also gets heated seats, auto parking, and 19-inch alloy wheels with red brake callipers.

Rivals available overseas include the BMW 330e that has a smaller 100km EV-only range, although the Mercedes 300e is said to get a fractionally better 114km EV range but is slower against the clock than the Audi (covering 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds).

In Europe the new plug-in Audi A5 e-hybrid quattro has been priced from €62,500 ($A107,000).

At the Audi A5 and S5 launch late last year there was no mention on whether the plug-in variant would be part of the Australian offering but following the rollout of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) it’s thought the arrival of the A5 e-hybrid is now inevitable.

An announcement is expected shortly.
