Polestar 2 rated five-star safe by ANCAP

The Polestar 2 has lived up it to its Swedish heritage by attracting a five-star ANCAP safety rating, despite a lot of its more advanced safety features being optional extras.

According to ANCAP, the Polestar 2 is the fifth dedicated electric vehicle to be tested under its latest 2020-2022 protocols, with high scores being awarded in all of its crash tests – especially the side impact test for which it was given full marks for adult and child occupant protection.

The flipside of this high score was a higher risk of injury to the occupants of other cars in a multi-vehicle collision, something it was hence penalised for.

Other strong results included an 80 per cent mark for ‘vulnerable road user protection’ thanks to its active bonnet and vigilant autonomous emergency braking system, however, the latter doesn’t work in reverse, meaning AEB ‘backover’ tests weren’t carried out.

ANCAP chief executive Carla Hoorweg said “top safety and environmental credentials” were high on consumers’ shopping lists these days and the Polestar 2 ticks both of these key boxes.

“The well-rounded Polestar 2 ticks these boxes and adds to the suite of five-star rated EVs now available to Australasian consumers,” she said.

“ANCAP safety ratings are designed to encourage vehicles to provide good protection to vehicle occupants and other road users, and the Polestar 2 has performed well across all areas of assessment.”

The other electric vehicles to have been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating under the stringent 2020-2022 protocols include the Mazda MX-30, Toyota Mirai, Hyundai IONIQ 5 and BMW iX.
