Polestar will push further upmarket and become a ‘premium luxury’ brand following the launch of the $135,000 Polestar 3 in early 2024.
Speaking after the global debut of the Polestar 3 yesterday in Copenhagen, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath ruled out launching a smaller, cheaper entry model to sit in the range below the current Polestar 2 SUV.
Instead, the Chinese-owned Swedish brand will focus on the launch of the Audi Q4 e-tron-rivalling Polestar 4 compact SUV in 2023, followed by not only the Polestar 3 large SUV but the Porsche Taycan-fighting Polestar 5 grand tourer in 2025 and the sporty Polestar 6 roadster in 2026.
“We have no plans for the moment to cater for a smaller car than Polestar 2 as it is, and in the future of course we want to keep such a position in our portfolio,” said Ingenlath.
“But today we don’t see that we will extend into a smaller car segment, as much as the temptation is to design a smaller Polestar. It’s about focus.”
Despite ruling out a new entry model to sit below the Polestar 2 mid-size fastback, which starts at $63,900, Ingenlath and other Polestar execs refused to rule out expanding the range upwards via a bigger and more expensive model.
However, that car wouldn’t arrive for some time, with the Polestar CEO announcing that the 2026 Polestar 6 sports car will ‘complete’ the EV brand’s current line-up.
“The two SUVs we will have, the two fastbacks and then the 6 roadster – by 2026 we’ll have achieved within a very short time a very rounded portfolio to carry the brand,” said Ingenlath.
“Doing much more – or any more – than that would be a distraction. It’s not the idea to explore each and every corner [of the market].”
