The 2023 Polestar 3 will be revealed on October 12 and the all-new large electric SUV has been confirmed to pack up to 380kW/910Nm in its most potent form.
These supercar-baiting outputs will come courtesy of the optional Performance Pack, which will also bring a bespoke chassis tune, but all Polestar 3s will be offered from launch with a rear-biased dual-motor all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring, plus adaptive dual-chamber air suspension.
Due on sale in Australia next year, the Polestar 3’s global reveal confirmation was accompanied by a fresh teaser image of the SUV perched on a platform overlooking the ocean.
It doesn’t reveal anything new about the design of the all-electric SUV given it’s been shot from the rear (most of the previous teasers have shown either the rear or side), but that hasn’t stopped Polestar waxing lyrical about the aesthetics.
“We had to ask ourselves: ‘what should a modern SUV look like?’,” Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said.
“Polestar 3 defines the SUV for the electric age and in designing it, we addressed some of the fundamentals of the archetype: proportions, stance and aerodynamics.”
Ingenlath also referenced the 3’s formidable performance credentials – especially the adaptive suspension which adjusts to suit road conditions every two milliseconds.
“It’s this instant ability to transform from a comfortable cruiser to a sharp, agile performance car in less than the blink of an eye that makes Polestar 3 special as an electric performance SUV,” he said.
Given its positioning as a large SUV, the Swedish-conceived but Chinese-born Polestar 3 will wade into battle against established high-riding EV heavyweights including the Tesla Model X, BMW iX, Audi e-tron and eventual Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, not to mention the closely related Volvo EX90.
Polestar launched in Australia last year with the Polestar 2 electric fastback and says it plans to launch one new EV a year starting in 2022 with the Polestar 3.
It will be followed by the Polestar 4 mid-size SUV in 2023, the Polestar 5 four-door GT in 2024 and the Polestar 6 roadster in 2026.
