The Polestar 3 has been teased again, this time wearing a light camo wrap in New York rather than hiding under a cover.
The subtle disguise reveals the sleek silhouette of the all-new mid-size electric SUV, which will aim directly at the upcoming Tesla Model Y that’s also expected to be released in Australia in 2022.
No new information was released about the Polestar 3, which will join the recently launched Polestar 2 fastback that will rival the Tesla Model 3 sedan. It will be followed by the Polestar 5 grand tourer.
However, while the Polestar 2 (and the Tesla Model 3 and Y) will come to Australia from China, Polestar has underlined the fact its first SUV will be produced in Charleston, South Carolina, although it’s not clear whether models destined for other markets will be built in China or elsewhere.
“We will build in America for Americans,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
“Polestar 3 is planned to be launched in 2022 as a premium electric performance SUV that will define the look of SUVs in the electric age. It will also be the first Polestar vehicle to be built in America.”
As you can see from this image, the Polestar 3 will wear several key Polestar design cues such as a T-shaped lighting signature, plus huge alloy wheels, a rising beltline, fastback-style rear-end and muscular rear haunches.
Polestar previously also confirmed the coupe-style 3 – unlike the 2 – will be based on an all-new dedicated electric platform, likely to be parent company Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA).
Like the Polestar 2, it will be available with both single- and dual-motor powertrains, but given the SEA architecture is capable of front-, rear- and all-wheel drive configurations with up to three electric motors, the Polestar 3 could trump the front/all-wheel drive Polestar 2 when it comes to performance and dynamics.
According to Geely, the quickest SEA-based vehicles are capable of hitting 100km/h in less than three seconds, while the most efficient will boast a range of more than 600km.
Like the Polestar 2, the Polestar 3 will also bring an infotainment system based on Google's Android Automotive system, plus top-end safety and autonomous driving functions.
