Polestar 5 design leaked

Patent application for all-electric flagship sedan reveals Polestar 5 stays true to striking concept

What appears to be the production version of the 2024 Polestar 5 has been uncovered years before you’re supposed to see the all-electric prestige sedan, with images from a patent application by the Volvo-owned EV brand posted online.

Originally set for a 2024 launch, the Polestar 5 blueprints from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) reveal how Polestar plans to stay true to the original well-received Polestar Precept concept that was revealed in 2020.

Created to be a flagship for the Polestar range, when the Polestar 5 eventually arrives it will be a direct rival for other fast four-door electric cars like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S.

Look closely at the design blueprints and there have been some detailed changes that include tweaked front doors.

The original concept’s dramatic rear-hinged ‘suicide’ doors have also been removed and replaced by a pair of conventional ones.

Other changes include repositioning the Precept’s Lidar module from the optimum roof-mounted position to, presumably, within the front grille.

The rear-view door cameras, meanwhile, have been junked for a pair of traditional door mirrors.

Perhaps most surprising, for a production model, is the Polestar 5 appears to do without a traditional rear windscreen.

Instead, there’s a full-width panoramic roof that just ends. Where you would expect a windscreen is a full-width light bar that looks like it might incorporate twin cameras.

Like the concept, there’s a dramatic LED light bar that runs the entire width of the car. Below it, there’s a new modified rear bumper that now features a rear number plate carrier.

Interestingly, the blueprints all tally with the single rear-three-quarter image that was released at the end of 2021.

There’s no word if it will keep its original dimensions that saw the concept measure in at 4.7m long, with a 3.1m wheelbase making it more of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class alternative size-wise.

Beneath the skin, Polestar has already revealed that the Polestar 5 will sit on an advanced bonded-aluminium architecture that has been specially designed for it.

This will give it a significant weight advantage over its rivals, with the Sino-Swedish brand claiming that its bespoke structure for the 5 is not only lightweight, but highly rigid too.

Within the cabin the Polestar 5 is set to be made entirely of recycled and plant-sourced material thanks to a partnership with Bcomp which has already created a flax-based composite alternative to plastic that could be used for the dash and seats as well as some body panels.

The car will be built at a new factory in China, which will also be carbon-neutral.

Unlike the former Polestar 1 flagship, the new Polestar 5 GT will not be made in limited numbers and will be a series-production model.

Instead of squeezing in the biggest battery possible, the Polestar 5 will have a 500km range and a battery that is likely to be compatible with ultra-fast charging.

It’s thought Polestar could unveil its 5 in 2023 in preparation for deliveries beginning in 2024.
