Polestar 5 prototype revealed
Official image of Polestar 5 electric GT sedan emerges ahead of prototype’s debut at GoodwoodPolestar has confirmed it will display a prototype of the 2023 Polestar 5 high-performance electric GT sedan at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK on June 23.
As well as being a feature of the First Glance Paddock, the all-new Polestar 5 – which is confirmed for release in Australia – will also be hustled up the famous hillclimb as both part of its development and as a dynamic display.
Its appearance at the iconic Goodwood event will be supported by the concept upon which it is based, the 2021 Polestar Precept, as well as Polestar’s electric roadster concept and the Polestar 2 BST Edition 270.
According to Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath, the Goodwood Festival is the brand’s favourite showcase event, especially this year given the Polestar 5’s development is being led by the brand’s British research and development team.
“This year, we are thrilled to showcase Polestar 5 going up the hill,” he said.
“Our UK R&D team is doing an amazing job developing the car, and we are proud to be able to highlight their hard work at this early stage.”
With the announcement, the Swedish-Chinese brand has released an early teaser image of its looming battery-electric four-door flagship in the form of a camouflaged rolling shot snapped at a private test facility.
Long and low with a sloping roofline, it’s hard not to draw parallels between the Polestar 5 and its arch-rival, the Tesla Model S.
Despite being fitted with bolt-on camo in this picture, the Polestar 5 is not expected to feature the same lighting signature as the established Polestar 2 and the inbound Polestar 3 SUV, swapping it out for a split design as per the Precept concept.
Simultaneously, we expect the Polestar 5 to considerably up the ante in terms of power and performance.
Given the Polestar 2 already develops up to 350kW/680Nm, the top-spec Polestar 5 should knock on the door of 400kW and churn out well over 700Nm of torque.
Figures like that would not only be fitting for a flagship four-door GT, but also ensure the Polestar 5 is competitive with at least the lower-series Tesla Model S variants and other rivals such as the BMW i4.
Also expect improvements in driving range, helped by its slippery shape and higher battery specification.
