Police seize a Ford and Ferrari over the weekend in Canberra

An L-plater on a suspended license driving an unroadworthy car is among the people who have had their car seized in the National Capital over the weekend.

ACT Policing had a busy weekend in Canberra, seizing two cars from two different incidents where the drivers clocked speeds of over 129 km/h in 80 zones.

Police were able to use recently passed legislation changes in the ACT which allows for immediate suspension of a driver’s licence and the ability to seize a vehicle for up to 90 days when drivers are caught doing excessive speeds.

The first incident occurred around midday on Saturday 1 July when police clocked a white Ford Falcon wagon driving at 129km/h in an 80 zone. Officers pulled over the 22-year-old man who produced a learner driver's licence which had already been cancelled. Officers also discovered that the vehicle he was driving was not roadworthy.

The man from Giralang was issued a further Immediate Suspension Notice suspending his right to drive in the ACT for another 90 days. His vehicle was seized and he was issued $3059 in fines.

The second incident occurred around 11am on Sunday 2 July when a red Ferrari F8 drove past a stationary police car along the Monaro Highway at significant speed. A speed check confirmed that the man was driving at 139km/h in the signposted 80 zone.

Police seized the Ferrari, and the driver from Griffith was issued an Immediate Suspension Notice for a period of 90 days.
