Volkswagen has launched its fastest, most powerful Polo yet... On sale Down Under now, the new Polo GTI sports a 132kW/250Nm version of VW's lauded 1.4-litre turbocharged/supercharged petrol four that powers the Light Car class leading hatch from 0-100km/h in just 6.9sec.
Succeeding the 1.8-litre turbo GTI model from previous generation Polo, the tiny 'twincharged' tearaway is not only more powerful, it is also more fuel efficient. At 6.1L/100km, Volkswagen Australia says it is 24 per cent thriftier than the car it replaces.
Three and five-door versions will be offered, both with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automated manual gearbox as standard equipment. The three-door starts from $27,790, with the five-door priced at $28,990.
Like all new-generation Polos, the GTIs feature a full suite of safety equipment including stability control and six airbags. Hill Start Assist, belt tensioners, belt force limiters plus belt warning, front head restraints and three rear head restraints are fitted.
The new Polo rolls on 17-inch alloys and gets a GTI specific bodykit to differentiate it from the garden-variety models.
Standard modcons include electric windows, central locking, driver seat height adjustment, aircon and heat insulated tinted glass. Options include ‘big car’ goodies such as bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights.
