Word is the highly collectible Porsche 911 Dakar will be given a 992.2 rebirth, albeit with the new-generation ‘T-Hybrid’ powertrain of the GTS – the first-ever electrified 911.
News of the plans were broken this week by British outlet Autocar, to which senior Porsche sources have supposedly confirmed details of the returning all-terrain sports car, including a late 2025 global launch.
Once again set to be offered in limited numbers, the Series II Dakar is sure to offer more power, performance and efficiency than its predecessor thanks to the hybridised 3.6-litre flat six twin-turbo-petrol powertrain good for 398kW/610Nm under the bonnet of the latest 911 GTS.
The electrification measures are also expected to enhance the Dakar’s off-road capabilities as well as its outright performance by means of greater torque vectoring, improved traction control and much wider torque band.
Autocar claims the new Dakar is being developed at Porsche’s Weissach engineering centre, but naturally, the brand isn’t commenting officially on the subject.
carsales’ own contacts also declined to comment or shed any light on the situation, but it would make sense for another Dakar to be in the works given the huge demand for the previous version, not to mention the ever-evolving game of one-upmanship between brands as they flex their technological muscles – Porsche will undoubtedly want to showcase just what the 911 and its new hybrid powertrain’s capable of.
Just 16 of the 2500 existing 911 Dakars made it onto Aussie soil, comprising 15 customer cars and one vehicle retained by Porsche for promotional and media purposes.
