Porsche has updated its most powerful 911-based racecar -- the menacing GT3 RSR --for the 2009 model year, and headlining the upgrades are a more potent engine and an improved aero package.
A quick recap: The GT3 RSR last season secured wins in the American Le Mans Series and at the Nürburgring 24 Hours and it competes in the GT2 class in international long distance races.
The '09 RSR is immediately distinguishable from its predecessor via its re-designed nose with large air intakes, and via the air outlet slots -- or so-called louvers -- between the headlights.
Porsche says these changes are an indication of the substantially re-designed air ducting for the radiators, partly necessitated by the optional air-conditioning unit.
The aerodynamics of the RSR are said to be further optimised by a rear wing with a wider adjustment range.
Other tweaks include a "weight-optimised braking" system and a lighter wiring harness, while the displacement of the water-cooled flat-six engine has grown from 3.8 to 4.0 litres.
However, the size of the air restrictors for the 2009 season has been further reduced, which means the engine's output is capped at 331kW at 7800 rpm, while peak torque of 430Nm arrives at 7250rpm.
As per modern F1 cars, a new multi-function display located above the dashboard indicates the optimum time to change gears.
Another new feature is the programmable multi-function, on-board supply system control device, giving teams the choice of many individual functions.
Porsche says one of these functions is the infinitely adjustable blinking frequency of the lights in the front apron, which helps pit crews immediately recognise their cars when they enter the pits at night in endurance events.
The Zuffenhausen company has built about 20 examples of the new GT3 RSR, and these are destined for customer teams around the world. The price? A hefty 380,000 Euro ($755,650) plus local taxes.
The GT3 RSR is the third and most extreme 911-based racecar offered by Porsche Motorsport -- the other two are the GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S.
The newcomer is set to makes its world debut at Sebring International Raceway in the US on Monday (January 26) as part of the three-day American Le Mans Series Winter test.
