Porsche 911 Targa gets new AWD system

As per its Carrera siblings, the updated 911 Targa gets PDK and direct injection. It also scores a revamped all-wheel-drive system...

Porsche has provided the first official images and details of its updated 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S and -- as per its Carrera 4 siblings (more here) -- the newcomer gains new direct-injection engines and a seven-speed PDK sequential gearbox.

However, just as noteworthy is the introduction of the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (PTM) in place of the former viscous-coupling all-wheel drive system.

As before, there are two variants, 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S, but both models gain more potent, cleaner burning direct-injection engines. The former is powered by a 254kW 3.6-litre flat-six, while the latter has a 283kW 3.8-litre unit.

The visual highlight of the 911 Targa remains the distinctive 1.54-square metre glass roof made up of two segments -- a sliding roof above the occupants and a top-hinged tailgate.

When opened completely, the roof slides beneath the tailgate within seven seconds to offer an open space above the passenger compartment of 0.45 square metres -- so it's the next best thing to a cabriolet.

The sliding roof comes as standard with a new electrically controlled sunblind, which is said to offer increased shading than was previously the case. When closed, this spans the entire area of the sliding roof, and can be opened and closed independently of the roof itself.

The glass roof and the tailgate are manufactured from specially treated glass designed to deflect the sun's glare, so the top of your noggin won't be burned to a crisp, even on hot summer days.

Meanwhile, the Targa's all-wheel drive is now provided via the electronically controlled Porsche Traction Management (PTM), which replaces the viscous multiple-plate clutch arrangement fitted previously.

With the previous viscous clutch, up to 40 per cent of torque could be directed to the front axle. In contrast, the new PTM system delivers an infinitely variable torque split, and is able to distribute up to 100 per cent of traction to the front or rear wheels.

The upshot, according to Porsche, is a faster and more precise transmission of power under all conditions.

Visual changes that distinguish the latest 911 Targa models include a mildly reprofiled nose and tail and the use of new lighting technology. Bi-xenon headlights and new LED daytime driving lights are standard and Dynamic Cornering Lights are available as an option.

As per the 911 Carrera 4 and 4S models, the Targa 4 and 4S are 44mm wider across the rear wheel arches than the rear-drive 911.

Further differentiation is provided by a new reflective trim that spans the width between the LED rear lights.
