Porsche has unveiled its second most powerful road car ever -- and it's an SUV. The new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S arrives Down Under in mid-2006 packing a prodigious 383kW and 720Nm of torque. It is Porsche's most powerful series production car -- second only to the limited production Carrera GT supercar in road-legal Porsches
The Cayenne Turbo S fetaures a modified version of the biturbo 4.5-litre V8 engine featured in the Cayenne Turbo.
In S guise the Cayenne V8 gets upgraded intercoolers, increasing turbo boost pressure by 0.2 bar (to a maximum of 1.9 bar), and a modified engine management system. The changes yield an extra 52kW and 100Nm over the standard Cayenne Turbo model.
The S also gets bigger brakes -- 380mm ventilated discs up front (30mm larger than the Turbo) and 358 mm at the rear (up 28mm). Other changes include: quad tailpipes (the new currency in hi-po specials it seems!), 20-inch alloys, Turbo S badging inside and out, and a new Navy Blue Metallic exterior colour exclusive to the model.
Porsche has traditionally eschewed the German marques' gentlemen's agreement to speed limit their cars to 250km/h (approx). The special 275/40 tyres on the Cayenne Turbo S are rated for speeds up to 300km/h.
Porsche Cars Australia say the Cayenne Turbo S will be available Down Under in "limited numbers." Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s launch.
By the way, Porsche says the extra performance offered by the Turbo S comes at no penalty to fuel consumption figure... Ahem, like as if anybody buying a 383Kw SUV is going to worry about lt/100km stats...!
In other Porsche news, the 1111th Carrera GT has been delivered to a customer in the United Arab Emirates. According to Porsche: "With this milestone, the 612hp, 330km/h Carrera GT is now the most successful high-performance sports car of all time."
According to Dr Wendelin Wiedeking, Chief Executive of the Stuttgart car maker: “The Carrera GT has once again strengthened the Porsche brand image as a sports car manufacturer... What’s more, Porsche has made money with the Carrera GT. In this respect, this sports car has also been an economic success for our company, as expected.”
Production of the left-hand drive only V10 GT will cease in April 2006.
