Porsche celebrates 911 milestone at Goodwood

Zuffenhausen brand marks 50 years of its iconic 911 supercar at British auto festival

Porsche is celebrating five decades of its legendary 911 at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The 50-year milestone is a key attraction at this year’s FoS, which runs over July 11-14, with seven generations of the iconic supercar built between 1963 and 2013 on display.

Headlined by a 911-inspired ‘Central Feature’ art installation outside Goodwood House, the Porsche commemoration includes a number of landmark 911 models at the Cartier Style et Luxe concours led by the new 991-series GT3.

A number of famous race drivers with Porsche connections will also stage demonstration runs up the Goodwood hill, including double Le Mans 24 Hour winner and German touring car champion Hans-Joachim Stuck, Porsche Supercup factory junior driver Michael Christensen and former works aces Richard Attwood and Vic Elford.

First shown as the model 901 at the 1963 Frankfurt motor show, the 911 has generation more than 820,000 global sales and provided the basis for two thirds of Porsche’s 30,000 race wins since then.

Leading the 911 charge at Goodwood will be a unique 1967 example of the original model, which will be a rolling ambassador for the ‘Follow the 911’ world tour that travels to various international events, trade fairs, historic rallies and racing events in France, China, Pebble Beach, California and Australia throughout this year.

Other 911s on display at Goodwood will be the ‘G-Series’ (1973-1989), ‘Type 964’ (1988-1994), ‘Type 993’ (1993-1998), ‘Type 996’ (1997-2005), ‘Type 997’ (2003-2013) and the latest ‘Type 991’ (from 2011).

In addition to current and historic 911s sourced from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, private collectors and enthusiasts, there will also be a parade of seven 911 race cars.

It will be highlighted by the 1973 911 RSR 2.8 that won the Sebring 12 Hour, effectively establishing the reputation of the Porsche coupe as a serious race car in the US.

There will also be two rally-going 911s from the Porsche Museum -- an SC ‘Safari’ and ‘Paris Dakar’ Carrera 4x4 – as well as the 964 911 RS from the 1993 Porsche Supercup Championship and the 996 911 GT3 RSR from the 2003 American Le Mans Series.
