Porsche convoy marks milestone

Sydney's iconic 'coathanger' provides the backdrop for half-century photo opp

Porsche 911s from every era crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge in line-astern formation last weekend, commemorating 50 years of Zuffenhausen's best known product.

Organisers say that 106 cars took part in the convoy across the bridge, occupying a lane specially reserved for the event. At the head of the convoy was the promotional Panamera that is currently operated by the NSW Police, leading the first 911 – a 1967 model loaned for the occasion by the Porsche Museum.

Further back in the convoy was the second 911 to be delivered in Australia – a 1965 model – two Carrera RS models from 1973, a 964 Speedster from 1993 and a 2010 911 GT2 RS. According to Porsche Cars Australia (PCA), the value of the convoy was estimated to exceed $15 million.

While the drive from Millers Point to Taronga Zoo took just 15 minutes, some owners had driven 200km to participate. Closing a major thoroughfare for the Sydney event has been described by PCA as "ambitious" and "audacious" – allegedly more so than similar promotional events for the 911's half century held in Paris, Geneva, Stuttgart, Shanghai, London and Sao Paolo.
