Porsche Macan makes official video debut

All-new mid-size SUV from Porsche teased on video for the first time ahead of its world debut next month

We’ve seen it undergoing camouflaged development testing and it has been confirmed for simultaneous world debuts at both the Los Angeles and Tokyo motor shows on November 20.

Now Porsche has released the first official teaser video of its all-new Macan, the mid-size SUV that will slot beneath the Cayenne in Australia by mid-2014.

The video provides the first glimpse of an undisguised Macan in detail and in sideways action – both on the tarmac and in sand dunes -- but devotes the first minute to Porsche sports car and racing heritage, and provides no technical details.

However, as we’ve reported, the Macan will be launched with two twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engines: a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 (from the Panamera) for the Macan S and a new 3.6-litre biturbo V6 for the top-shelf Macan Turbo.

Also revealed in photographs of a slide show leaked to Jalopnik from a Porsche dealer meeting in Atlanta last month is the fact both models will come standard with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission.

It’s also known that Porsche will later add a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel to the Macan range, but has ruled out a four-cylinder petrol engine -- presumably to help differentiate it from the Audi Q5 upon which it is based.

According to the internal documents, the Macan S will open the initial range in the US priced from $US52,000, while the Macan Turbo will start at $US75,000 in North America.

Despite the top-down launch rollout, expect Macan pricing to start from under $100,000 in Australia, making it Porsche’s cheapest – and almost certainly its best-selling – model here.

While the Macan S and Macan Turbo should be priced either side of $100K, expect the four-cylinder Macan Diesel to eventually open the Australian range at around $80,000 – well above the Q5, which starts at around $62,000.

Porsche is also expected to add a more powerful six-cylinder diesel to the range, with the Macan Diesel S likely to be powered by either the Panamera’s upcoming 221kW/650Nm 3.0-litre TDI V6 or the Audi SQ5’s 230kW/650Nm twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6, matched with an eight-speed torque-converter auto.
