A fast two-door coupe based on the current Porsche Panamera is said to be under development to help the car-maker steal sales from both the BMW 8 Series and the Aston Martin Vantage.
According to
, when asked to address recent rumours a Porsche Panamera coupe was on the cards, senior sources working for the car-maker refused to deny it is developing not one but two variants spun-off its GT.Set to offer considerably more space than the car-maker's 911, it's believed the Panamera coupe and convertible are being developed to be proper 2+2 with space for four adults and their luggage.
When asked if the Panamera's design could be adapted to a large coupe or cabrio, Porsche design boss Michael Mauer bullishly told the Brit mag:
"As a designer there are no limits to what I can conceive, I believe it is the design department's role to sketch and consider every model it can for the future so that we are ready should anyone wish to pursue a project.
"But if you are asking me to confirm if such projects are on the way then you are going to be disappointed. It's not my role to consider such things."
Rumours are rife within the German media that the spiritual successor to the original 928 are at an advanced stage of development.
Based on a shortened version of the same MSB architecture that underpins the Panamera, some have speculated the cost of both the Panamera coupe and cabriolet is being shared with Bentley who has already internally green lit a production version of the stunning 2015 Bentley EXP10 Speed 6 concept.
Instead of being badged the 'Panamera', both the Porsche coupe and convertible are destined to be renamed, to highlight both car's sportier, more athletic aspiration.
Under the bonnet, both cars will share the Panamera's engine line-up, including the plug-in hybrid.
It's thought a concept could even be shown as soon as the 2020 Geneva motor show March next year.
