Porsche RennSport off to a strong start

Inaugural Aussie event fires up the Porsche punters... but when's the next one?
Sydney Motorsport Park – formerly Eastern Creek – played host last weekend to a huge gathering of Germany's best known sports cars.
Porsche RennSport drew collectible cars and enthusiasts from across the nation to celebrate the famous marque. Among the events over the weekend were two Porsche Carrera Cup Australia heats and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge. According to event organisers, 240 cars took part in the on-track activities, with 120 more in the 'Porschestrasse' for Concours d'Elegance and Show 'n' Shine events.
In all 500 Porsches were present and 4000 visitors attended.
Max Twigg and Luke Youlden shared the honours in the Carrera Cup, with Richard Muscat winning every heat of the GT3 Cup Challenge.
On static display duties were a host of famed Porsches from the past, including the 936 that won Le Mans in 1981, Vern Schuppan's 956C that campaigned in the Japanese Sportscar Championship during the 1980s, and a 1968 911 TR, which former driver Alan Hamilton claimed "came within 10 yards" of winning the 1969 Australian Touring Car Championship.
The organisers made sure that Porsche fans of all kinds were fully engaged, with the Porsche Kids Driving School, the NSW Police's Panamera, 4WD activities (for the Cayenne owners) and the Porsche Sports Driving School covering all bases. Festivities concluded on the Sunday evening with a dinner for 220 guests to celebrate the endeavours of Porsche racers Alan Hamilton, Jim Richards and Craig Baird.
"The feedback from Porsche competitors, Porsche car club members and the general public to the inaugural Rennsport Festival in Australia has been overwhelmingly positive," said Porsche's Australian MD, Michael Winkler, as quoted in a press release.
"You measure the success of special events such as this not only by what happens on track but by the number of smiles and feeling of camaraderie in the garages."
The success of the event seems certain to ensure there'll be another, the question being when?
"People are already asking me when the next Rennsport will be," said Winkler. "The honest answer is ‘I don’t know right now’ but we are certain to have another, even bigger and better judging by the success of our first attempt."
