Porsche Targa treat

Classic racing machine swaps museum for Tasmanian rally stages

While Jim Richards will be chasing a record ninth Targa Tasmania outright win in the latest Porsche 911 GT2, the German firm will have another entry further down the field.

A lightweight, aluminium bodied 356 B Carrera GTL Arbarth valued at $1 million is entered in the Early Classic Competition.

The car is part of the company's museum collection and will be driven by museum director Klaus Bischof.

It is the tenth time Porsche has entered a classic factory car in Australia's most famous tarmac rally.

The 356 B Carrera GTL Arbarth was originally developed for the Italian Targa Florio road race so Bischof believes it will be ideally suited to the challenging Tasmanian roads.

Thanks to its aluminium body the car only weighs 800kg and with its 99kW 1.6-litre flat-four engine the car is capable of reaching up to 220km/h.

"Every time we come to Targa (Tasmania) we bring a special car to the event," says Bischof.

"This rally is the most difficult on the world historic motorsport calendar, so we need to make sure the car we bring is suited to the roads and the distance."

Only 21 examples of this car were built hence the large pricetag.

Targa Tasmania runs from April 28 to May 3 and covers 2000km.
