Porsche Taycan software update boosts range and charging

All owners of the Porsche Taycan are eligible for a free software update that will upgrade their electric performance car to feature the latest technology, and will even provide a slight range boost on dual-motor models.

Porsche has yet to confirm when it will roll out its new MY2023 software upgrade, but says it will not be an over-the-air update.

Instead, Taycan owners will be required to visit their local dealer for the upload.

The headline news is the new software is claimed to enhance efficiency while slashing charging times.

Following the update, the Taycan will be able to disconnect the front motor under partial load in Normal and Range mode for less drag at speed.

Both motors also decouple when coasting and at standstill to reduce electricity use.

Depending on the model, the range is set to increase by up to 50km on the strictest WLTP test regime.

Other changes include better thermal management of the battery, particularly in low-temperature conditions, and a quicker pre-condition function that now ensures optimum charging rates for a quicker top-up.

The Taycan now ‘remembers’ your preferred level of regenerative braking when cycling through driving modes and shows energy recuperation in whatever mode you’re in.

While being updated, Porsche dealers will offer customers the opportunity to upgrade the on-board charger to a 22kW device that delivers faster top-ups.

A new Plug & Charge function is also claimed to eliminate the need for a payment card or app when charging at compatible chargers, with the car communicating directly to the charging provider.

Within the cabin the infotainment system has been updated with a new easier to use “colourful tile screen” interface.

There’s also a redesigned head-up display and a fresh feature that filters charging stations by their power output on the sat-nav.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are now wireless, while Spotify is available. Voice control has been improved too.

Elsewhere, the parking sensors become more sophisticated, while there’s a new parking space locator.

Finally, for Taycan models built from 2020-2022, there’s a new Function on Demand accessory that allows some features to be unlocked after purchase, such as keyless opening of the doors and tailgate.

On brand-new MY23 Taycan models there’s fresh alloy wheel choices and a new Variable Light Control panoramic roof that can adjust the transparency of the roof.

The Taycan is also now available with the option of front and rear dash-cams that come equipped with GPS sensors as well as polarisation filters for crystal-clear recordings.

More than 75,000 Taycan owners worldwide are expected take advantage of the new updates, including in Australia where 838 examples of the all-electric performance car have been delivered since its launch in 2021.
