Power company offers flat rate car charging

AGL will launch $1 per day flat rate car charging

Power company AGL will launch a flat rate electric car charging scheme later this year. That’s the news the company’s CEO, Andy Vesey, delivered at this week’s Australian Energy Week Conference in Melbourne.

The offer will see consumers able to charge their electric vehicle at home for the flat rate of $1 per day. The amount of electricity is not capped however users are required to be AGL customers and have an AGL: Smart digital metre fitted at their residence.

It’s understood AGL will make the offer available via OEMNs and dealerships at the point of purchase of the EVs.

Specialist reports stated the offer is in part a bid to win customers for the power company and secured base load for AGL. The Financial Review stated the $1 per day offer was “one of a suite of services the company plans to roll out in a bid to boost electricity demand and remain relevant to customers enticed by the allure of installing rooftop solar and batteries to go off the grid”.

“If you’re an AGL customer, or become one, then we will provide charging for electric vehicles, $1 a day, all you can eat,” Vesey told the Australian Energy Week keynote address audience.

Vesey said the electricity supplied would be fully carbon offset.
