Power up, price down for base MiTo

Alfa Romeo has effectively dropped the 88kW MiTo and repositioned the 114kW model below $30,000

Local Alfa Romeo distributor Ateco Automotive has just welcomed the new 125kW MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde to Australia. But hot on the heels of that announcement comes the news that the importer is reducing the MiTo model range back to two variants.

The base model 88kW MiTo has been dropped from the range and Ateco has shifted the 114kW Sport model into its place, complete with the 17-inch alloy wheels (in lieu of 16-inch wheels for the 88kW variant). With the change in position for the former mid-range MiTo there's a new price to go with it: $29,990 -- not including on-road costs and dealer pre-delivery charge.

"The arrival of the 125 kW MiTo QV has enabled Alfa Romeo to provide a double win for drivers looking for an exciting, stylish small car that can boast a unique 100 year heritage," General Manager of Alfa Romeo in Australia, Andrei Zaitzev, was quoted as saying in a press release.

"Not only is it now possible to buy a MiTo with a recommended retail price plus on statutory charges and on road costs below $30,000, that car now offers the 114 kW powerplant to produce a unique blend of performance, style and excitement."

The 114kW model (producing 230Nm of torque as well), will reach 100km/h from a standing start in 8.0 seconds and post a top speed of 215km/h, according to Alfa Romeo. Driven more sedately, the car will record combined-cycle fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km.

Standard features for the lower-priced MiTo include front fog lights, sports cloth upholstery, sports instrumentation and carbonfibre-look dashboard. Alfa's own DNA system is joined by 'Blue&Me' hands-free (voice control) interface and an audio system compatible with USB-capable external music sources.

DNA controls engine, steering, suspension, and transmission at the driver's whim, to suit different driving conditions: Dynamic, Normal, All-weather.

"With its new variants, prices and specification, the Alfa Romeo Mito not only maintains Alfa Romeo's reputation for blending performance and style with value for money," Zaitzev concluded. "It also enables drivers looking for something more than a boring small car to own part of a 100 year legend -- an Alfa Romeo."
