The Tata Nano shot to stardom back in 2008 when it clinched the illustrious title of World's Cheapest Car.
But with the rudimentary runabout's reputation taking a direct hit over serious safety concerns -- the bargain runabout recently involved in several fiery finales -- Chinese newcomer Geely is reportedly readying a cut-price challenger.
The Geely IG (Intelligent Geely), first seen sporting gullwing doors at the Beijing Motor Show, will offer seating for four, and is said to be of a higher build quality than its Indian-built adversary.
Although the stylish gullwing doors are unlikely to make production, it's almost a certainty that the subcompact simpleton will be powered by a super frugal (52kW) 1.0-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
"The concept has had a very positive reaction, and with the car not launching until 2012 there is time for us to expand our network before then," said a Geely spokesperson.
To be priced from $2250, undercutting the Nano by $450, the Geely IG microcar could be ready for sale in developing markets such as China and India from as early as 2012.
What's more, Geely -- who recently purchased Volvo from Ford -- says newly acquired hybrid technology will feature in its pocket-sized IG, a hybrid variant expected by 2015.
