Prices up for revised Toyota 70 Series

Safer, stronger, more efficient 70 Series LandCruiser up to $5500 more expensive

Toyota's upgraded 70 Series LandCruiser workhorse now costs up to $5500 more than before, following a comprehensive safety upgrade that focusses mostly on the volume-selling single-cab ute version.

The single-cab pick-up, which accounts for half of all LC70 sales, is now priced from $62,490 plus on-road costs (up $5500), while the five-door Wagon continues to open the range at $60,990, and both Troop Carrier and double-cab models now start at $64,990 – all up $3000.

Higher-spec GXL grades add at least $3000 to the price of the entry-level WorkMate, with the double-cab GXL topping the range at $68,990 plus ORCs.

Air-conditioning remains a $2761 option across the range (fitted), despite the fact this option box is ticked by almost all buyers, while premium paint adds $550 and diff locks (single-cab GX and double-cab WorkMate only) cost a further $1500.

As we've reported, Toyota's trusty 70 Series, which dates back to 1984, brings significant structural upgrades plus side curtain and driver's knee airbags (for a total of five) that allow it to achieve a five-star ANCAP safety rating – but only for the top-selling single-cab version.

Previously, the LC70 single-cab came only with a three-star ANCAP safety rating, while all other 70 Series models remain unrated and continue to be fitted with only two airbags and anti-skid brakes.

However, all LC70 models now bring electronic stability and traction control, hill start assist, cruise control, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, a passenger seatbelt reminder, a new fuse box for easier accessories connectivity and wider (6.0-inch – up from 5.5) 16-inch one-piece wheels with tubeless 225/95 tyres. Brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution are also standard.

There's also an upgraded 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 now with piezo electric injectors, which along with taller second and fifth ratios in the five-speed manual transmission, lowers fuel consumption.

Performance outputs remain unchanged at 151kW at 3400rpm and 430Nm over 1200-3200rpm, but combined fuel consumption reduces by 1.2L/100km or 10.1 per cent to 10.7L/100km.

CO2 emissions are similarly down, to 281g/km, and a diesel particulate filter is fitted across the range. The LC70's diesel V8 now meets Australia's mandatory Euro 5 emissions standard.

Safety upgrades to the single-cab include a revised ladder chassis with greater torsional rigidity, thanks to thicker side rails and seven revised cross-members, one of which is new.

Toyota says the stronger frame not only improves safety, ride comfort and handling dynamics, which are also aided by a new Australian-tuned suspension damping, but reduces noise, vibration and harshness.

There are also 12 new or thicker body panels, including the pillars, doors, floor and bonnet, which now features a pedestrian safety-enhancing central 'power bulge', plus new bucket seats with improved mounting points and a new structure that helps prevent whiplash. There's new seat trim and upgraded side bolsters and lumbar support.

Other improvements reserved only for the single-cab include under-dash padding for the passenger and relocation of the steering link behind the front axle, improving safety and requiring the introduction of a single 130-litre fuel tank – the same as wagon and double cab-chassis models. The troop carrier continues with two 90-litre tanks.

Base WorkMate models come with a hose-out vinyl interior, tilt/telescopic steering wheel adjustment and Bluetooth connectivity, while GXL variants add luxuries like cloth seat trim.

Payload is reduced slightly but remains above 1200kg, while towing capacity is unchanged at 3500kg and capped-price servicing costs $340 per service.

Toyota has sold 1.3 million LandCruiser 70s since 1984, with 260,167 Australian sales comprising 20 per cent of that volume since 1985, making it the fourth largest market globally.

Of the 75,000-odd examples sold worldwide last year, Australian sales remained steady at around 7500, about half of which were single-cabs.
